Deborah Heriford: Where are you, Debbie?

Deborah Heriford

Please note that after this story, I was in contact with the family and the media and subsequently have put up several stories about Debbie.  Please put Heriford above in the search box to read them all.

Debbie still missing, husband allowed to sell home.

Update:  There has been speculation that the body found in Black Forest area of Colorado on September 12, may be Debbie’s remains.  I have found out that the body is NOT Debbie’s.

If you haven’t heard about Deborah Heriford, who has been missing since March, I am not surprised.

There is no standard when it comes to missing persons.  You either hear a lot about them, or some, or nothing at all.  It depends on the type of case, the hook, and the energy of the local media to sniff out details to keep the case alive.

This is not Debbie’s dog but her dog is a Westie

The local media ran the missing story in this case and the national media picked it up, primarily because of her dog, Happy.  Now things have grown quiet and no new information is coming out.

I tried to keep the story going by letting everyone know about her vigil last Saturday along with the local media.  Now, there is nothing.  I can’t find anymore news about her and no one is talking.  Heck the psychic‘s are not even talking about her on the forums.

I read where KRDO said that Deborah has four grown children and KRDO said Deborah’s oldest daughter said “that investigators told her not to talk about the case.”  Now I know why info is slim.  The family is listening to the police and are not letting any information out. Other than her son, Dan and her daughter, Sarah, saying a few words here or there, there has not been any information coming from the family.

I do not know why the police ask families to not talk.  Evidently, because they say it will mess up their investigation.   I know the police told Billie Jean Dunn not to talk and she ignored them and was on every station that would have her.  Everyone knows about her daughter, Hailey Dunn, but who has heard about poor Debbie.

Street where Debbie lived

Media is always looking for news and when someone goes missing they will relay every little bit of that news as long as they can get information, but when the police don’t talk, and then the family doesn’t talk, the information goes away and the story goes away.  The last source of info is the neighbors and after they tell all they know, then the story is dead.

I found a Facebook page for Deborah put up by Jessica Mansfield and I am the only one that has “liked” it.  I encourage you to stop by and “Like” the page to show your support to the family.

Is Debbie’s case going to be one of those that we never hear what happened to her?  Did Debbie meet with an untimely end, get lost or has Debbie just walked away from her life?

Debbie was married to Harold Heriford and they had four children.  Harold retired as the head of the military police at Peterson Air Force Base in 1996.

Harold began working as an appraiser and owned a business called Professional Appraisers of Colorado.  A complaint was filed with the Board of Real Estate Appraisers in the State of Colorado against Harold for five different properties that were appraised during 2004 through 2006.  The Board  found “reasonable grounds exist to refer Respondent to hearing for violations of appraisal law.”  The final agency order and stipulation in 2008, fined Heriford $1,000.00, plus 75 hours of real estate appraisal education, and supervision for six months.

In October 2010, Harold and Debbie filed for divorce, records show.  A month after,  Debbie pursued a contempt citation against Harold, charging that he began liquidating a real estate appraisal business in defiance of a judge’s order to preserve the couple’s assets. He also told her that he would be reducing the monthly payments he made to her by $500 because he had purchased a new car, the motion alleged.

In February 2011, Harold was ordered to begin paying his wife $2,500 a month until the divorce is complete, court records show.

In March, Debbie disappeared.

Colorado Springs police told KRDO news that they did not consider Debbie disappearance a crime, but suspicious.  If Debbie does not show up for her final divorce hearing that is set for 9 a.m., May 24, will they consider her case a crime, then?

  1. Debbie is a friend of mine and this whole situation is unlike anything I have ever had to deal with. Thank you for putting out so much information. Please continue to keep putting Debbie's face and story out there. Perhaps it might help find out what happened to her.

  2. Post a picture of the dog. Maybe people remember seeing the dog. She must have walked her dog using the same route everyday. Why don't we know the route? Someone has seen this woman and her dog on the Thurs she disappeared. The area is residential. Somebody took her because she would never let her dog (her only companion if she lived alone)run loose and possibly get harmed. Let the family speak to the media. With no information from the police you begin to wonder if they are conducting this inquiry correctly and with vigor. This is a well loved Mother and friend who is tragically missing. Somebody saw something. Have the courage to come forward and let the family have some hope.

  3. Thank you for posting about Debbie's disappearance as the silence about this locally is very hard to take for her many friends. I understand that the police don't want their investigation tainted media coverage, but it feels like she has been forgotten. For those of us who love her, it would be good to read ANY mention of her in the media. She did not walk away–something criminal happened to take her away from her kids. There is no other explanation.

  4. Hard to believe it's been almost 4 years. The sadness is still acute. I still pray all the time she will be found. I'm a member of her family and can't understand how the case could have just been dropped. I've asked the lead detective if, in fact, it has become a cold case but he denie it. The more proactive the family became, the less help and information we received from the detective. It was a dilemma.

  5. As a dear friend of Debbie's, I am very frustrated that in just 2 days it will be the 4th year anniversary of the day she went missing & since that first year nothing has been mentioned by either police or media.
My prayer & plea for someone to come forward to help in solving Debbie's whereabouts & the circumstances involved. If only all who know & love Debbie could have answers & some sort of closure.
I plead with you, if you know ANYTHING at all please contact the authorities. To everyone else, let's make sure to keep Debbie's memory forever alive by sharing her beauty & her love of the Lord.
