Father and daughter missing in Colorado FOUNDmountains

UPDATE 7/4/2011 – A father and daughter found dead on Mount Missouri died from head and neck injuries, according to the Chaffee County Coroner.

Coroner Randy Amettis called 7NEWS after he finished the autopsies on Monday.

“Dr. Michael von Gortler and his daughter, Makana, both died from blunt-force trauma injuries to the head and neck,” Amettis said. “There was no indication of injuries from lightning.”

Relatives told 7NEWS they believe the two were likely blown off a cliff.

Michael von Gortler, 53, a well known doctor from Boulder, Colorado and his daughter Makana von Gortler, 20, are missing in the mountains of Colorado, and believe to be on Missouri mountain.

They both went on a hike in the area on June 22 and they have not been heard of since June 21, when Makana texted her boyfriend.

“The father is said to have been a very experienced hiker and outdoorsman, but I also heard reports that on other hikes he’s known to go off the trail and explore, and things like that,”  Sheriff Pete Palmer told msnbc.com.

The terrain is really rugged and searchers found Michael’s truck parked at the mountain trail head.  A dog team picked up a scent on Wednesday.

Another search team is scheduled for Thursday.

Michael is a family practitioner and worked in emergency for over 18 years and his daughter is a University of Colorado student.  Michael was scheduled to be back on Friday and his daughter on Sunday.

Anyone with information about the hikers’ whereabouts can call the Chaffee Sheriff’s Office at 719-539-2596.
