How many attempted child abductions have there been in Colorado?

UPDATE:  On October 22, Authorities released information that they made a DNA match.  DNA connected to Jessica’s murder matched DNA from an attempted abduction of a woman who was jogging at Ketner Lake were made.  This means that the man has not limited himself to trying to abduct just children.  With that new information I have added adult abductions along with the children abductions reported in the Colorado area.

Previous story:   I began searching for any past child abduction attempts over the last couple of years in Colorado and this is what I found from most recent to oldest:  (Please note that there is probably a lot more that did not get out to the public.  If you live in Colorado and know of a case, like an incident that happened near your child’s school or something reported to police that happened but it never made it to the local media, please let us know, so I can add it to the list.  (You can remain anonymous)

What I am attempting to do is find out if there are any similarities in any of these cases.  A car is the best way, but if you have no car info, that is alright.

Also, at the bottom of this, I am talking about how many violent sexual offenders there are in Colorado, and one particular man that was arrested and had in his possession a brown cross. (Police found a small wooden cross while investigating the murder of Jessica Ridgeway and are determining if there is a connection)

A 10-year-old girl was walking to Green Mountain Elementary School when a man stopped his car, stood outside of it and demanded that the girl get in.  They believe the same man who grabbed a girl in Denver and performed a sex act on Thursday may be responsible for the Lakewood, attack.

April 2, 2003 –  Golden, Colo. – At the entrance to Canyon Points Circle in Golden, Colo. a white male, 30 to 40 years of age, drove up to the girl in a dark blue, newer, four-door sedan. September 26, 2002 – Denver, Colo. Police are looking for a man they say tried to kidnap an 8-year-old girl at knife-point from in front of a west Denver school last week. January 11, 2001 –  Daryl Ray McClure, 45, was arrested after trying to abduct a 3-year-old boy from Jefferson County’s Clement Park.  The grandmother was putting the boy in the car, when a white pickup truck driven by McClure rammed them and demanded the boy.  The grandmother grabbed the child and ran.  McClure ran after them and a citizen, who saw what was happening drove up to the grandmother and told her to get in and called the police.  On the front seat of McClure’s truck, deputies found a plastic bag containing candy canes, a child’s butterfly barrettes, play lipstick, a black comb and a brown cross, according to the affidavit.  (McClure is not listed as a sexual offender and I can’t find anything that says he ever was.)
As I was doing my research, I found Adam-Walsh’s Top 100 Most Wanted Sex Offenders in Colorado.   I highly suggest if you are in Colorado to take time and click on the link and look at the photos.  It will download the PDF file onto your computer when you click on it.  Out of that list there are 7 that have been arrested or are in jail.

There is also Colorado’s Convicted Sex Offender list .  The list is by counties and serves as a great resource.  Although you may find someone living near you, it is better to know who and where they are and to be able to keep an eye on them than to not know who or where they are.

So, how many sexually violent predators* (SVP) are registered in Colorado?   Nearly 200 wo/men are permanently branded as sexually violent predators in Colorado because of convictions for sexual activity involving children, reports the Denver Post. But, with them failing to report their location or moving around the country there is no real way to know the exact number.

A *sexually violent predator (SVP) a person who engages in sexual acts with a minor, tends to be a stranger to the victim and is at the highest risk to re-offend, among other factors.
