UPDATE:  Jan 9, 2013 – Authorities believe they have located the body of John Matthews in a ravine near Rock Creek Park on Sunday, according to  D.C. police.


A body was found about 1:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of East Beach Drive NW, near the northern edge of the park close to the Maryland line. A cause of death is pending an autopsy.

John Matthews, 88, from Washington D.C. has been missing since Monday.  He was last seen on the 1400 block of Oglethorpe Street NW at about 10 p.m.

He is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 155 pounds, with brown eyes, gray hair and a medium complexion. He was wearing brown pants, a blue sweater and maroon vest.  He suffers from dementia and may be in need of medication, police say.
