UPDATE 9/17/16 – NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce told the media that bones had washed up on Rikers Island, and that “we believe we’ve identified that female from the clothing that washed up with the bones.”

A press release  confirmed that police had identified the remains as those of Shields.

“On Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at approximately 1510 hours, at Riker’s Island West, human remains were discovered on the shoreline of location,” police said in the release. “Detectives from the 114 Precinct and the Medical Examiner’s responded to the location. Based on an examination, it was determined that the deceased was Sierra Shields.”

Original Story:  “We’re all in shock still at what happened,” Sierra’s father, Chris Shields, tells PEOPLE. “Right now everything’s a possibility because we don’t really know what happened when she left the terminal. That’s the biggest unknown.”  Sierra Shields, 30, is a flight attendant, who was last seen around noon on Jan 14, 2016 at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York.  She was scheduled to fly later that day, but never made the flight, and has not been seen since.
