UPDATE 3/16/21 – New information came out in court records. According to an affidavit, Chairez was brought into SAPD headquarters and she would not say where James was. Police did tell media that she did say she “spoke about wanting to give him up for adoption” and that she spoke at length about her mental health issues and wanted the victim to “be in a better place.” It also said she spoke about not being ready to be a mother and that her son “deserves better” according to KHOU.
Original Story: James Avi Chairez, 18 months, has been missing since Jan. 4, 2021. He was last seen at Walgreen’s in Marbach Road in San Antonio, Texas with his mother, D’Lanny Reaneille Chairez, 20, on a security camera.
On March 8, the police stated in a press release they were looking for James and D’Lanny. On March 15, the authorities said that Chairez has been arrested after blood was found on a crib sheet. She has been charged with abandoning or endangering a child.
Family members told police that they had not seen James since Thanksgiving and asked D’Lanny where James was and she had stated he was with different people for adoption, per court documents.
A court affidavit read the authorities did multiple search warrants, including on Chairez’s trailer, where they found James’ car seat, stroller, diapers, toys and the sheet with human blood on it. They have not defined if it was James’ blood or not.
Also, on Monday the police stated they had a new lead in the case as they released surveillance video of Chairez riding a VIA bus on the city’s north side for several hours. It was unclear if James was with her in the video clip that was shared, according to KIIITV News.
“Investigators believe baby James is still in the San Antonio area. We are asking for any information on baby James’ whereabouts and who he may be with to call SAPD Missing Person’s Unit at 210-207-7660.”
