UPDATE 2019: Chad Allen Jernigan, 42, pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse. Jernigan received a maximum 10-year sentence, a maximum $10,000 fine and agreed to pay $1,000 in restitution to the York family for Richard York’s final expenses.
Richard York died of a methamphetamine overdose while on Jernigan’s property July 4, 2017, witnesses testified. Richard York was helping Jernigan move furniture on the day of his death.
UPDATE 2018: “Late Thursday evening, Detectives were able to locate a person of interest in the case, Chad Jernigan, 41, of Texarkana, Arkansas,” the press release said. As Dateline has previously reported, Jernigan was the last person to see Rickey alive. The two were not only longtime friends, Rickey’s sister Angela York told Dateline in January, they were also former brothers-in-law; Angela told Dateline she and Jernigan had once been married, but divorced 15 years ago.
“While interviewing Jernigan, he admitted to detectives that he had buried a body under a storage building in his back yard,” the press release continued. “After obtaining a search warrant, detectives have located a body in a shallow grave covered in concrete and dirt.
Original Story: Richard York, 45, is missing from Texas. He was last seen July 4, 2017 in Texarkana. Richard, aka a Rickey was helping his friend, Chad moved furniture out of a storage unit. Afterwards, Rickey was going to meet his son, Brody. Security camera show Rickey and Chad at the storage unit and both of them leaving together.
The police talked with Chad and he took police to Bubba Green’s Towing on Lake Drive and Summerhill Road just south of Interstate 30, where he dropped Rickey off. From there Rickey was going to walk. Rickey may have been intoxicated when he was dropped off as he was drinking beer as payment for helping Chad move.
Rickey does not own a cell phone. The Bowie County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team searched the Sunset area near Sunset Baptist Missionary Church, but they did not located Rickey.
Rickey’s information is in NAMUS. Richard “Rickey” York is 5’10” and 205 lbs. He has a tattoo of an eagle on his upper arm. The family is offering a $3,100 reward for any information leading to Rickey’s whereabouts.
